The last member still at large from the assassination squad that targeted President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the 15 July 2016 coup attempt has been arrested in Afyonkarahisar, ending a search that lasted a decade.

The man detained is reported to be a dismissed army captain and former helicopter pilot. Judicial proceedings against the squad's other members had already concluded.

Investigations into the coup attempt have spanned a large number of trials and fugitive files over the ten years since. This arrest closes the last outstanding fugitive record in the squad's case file.

MHA Analysis

Closing a decade-long search is about institutional memory more than judicial process. Proceedings against the squad's other members concluded long ago; this arrest closes an open record rather than producing a new legal outcome. That prosecutions arising from the coup attempt have stretched across ten years is itself a measure of the load an investigation on this scale places on a judiciary.
